Hilton Helper in the book The Impending Crisis of the South argues and tackles this idea of economy and slavery and the differences that they hold. During the Civil War and Reconstruction period the North was a economically thriving with out of the use of chattered slavery that was popular in the south. Hilton points this use of slavery to the economical failure of the south.
George Fitzhugh in the book Sociology of the South argues about the consequences of creating a “free nation” because it creates this hierarchy of the “rich vs. the poor”. He did not necessarily see slavery as a means of only a black person should be a slave, but suggested the benefits of slavery.
